What is SEO?
Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is a set of techniques that enhance the understanding of the subject or content of a webpage or a collection of webpages by search engines known as organic (natural or free). This process aims to improve the visibility of websites on search engine result pages (Google, Yahoo, etc.) by providing the maximum amount of information about the webpage content to search engine robots, relying primarily on keywords related to the main topics of the site. Generally, a site is considered well-positioned if it appears among the top ten search results for keywords specifically related to the main topics of the site.
SEO Techniques
Improving a website involves developing multiple internal techniques: accessibility to content, semantic coding, creating an optimized tree structure, forming internal page links, and adding new content. However, other external factors will significantly affect the site's ranking in the eyes of search engines: the number and quality of external links related to internal content, and the signals provided by social networks all positively impact.
Link Analysis
Search engines can read the content of site/page links (URLs) as text. While it is true that the process of improving a site's positioning starts with the quality and relevance of its content to the users, everything is important in improving a website's ranking on search engines, including paths and URL links of each page. Search engines read URL text very well, so these are considered the best keywords, which explains their high prices. For example, if the domain name Jamal.com hosts an MP3 website, it is better to name its pages Jamal.com/mp3.html instead of Jamal.com/page_1.html. Google analyzes sites as visitors do, so URL titles should be logical and relevant to the page content.
White Hat and Black Hat Techniques
SEO is handled in different ways, generally divided into two main techniques known as White Hat and Black Hat. White Hat technique relies on creating high-quality and relevant content for the user. Key characteristics of this technique include using accurate and relevant keywords, building internal and external links (Link Building), creating good content on blogs and directories to get backlinks. Black Hat technique relies on using all available means, such as bulk buying links or hiding keyword-rich texts by making them the same color as the background or giving them a transparent attribute. This technique often leads to the removal of sites relying on it from Google's index or other search engines.
Keyword Selection
Before starting the SEO process, it is crucial to identify and select keywords. There are different targeting strategies, such as targeting general requests (TV, apartment, cheap flights), which despite their competition, cover a large volume of user traffic. Conversely, long-tail techniques target a specific audience. When using this strategy, many key phrases must be used.
To determine your keywords, several tools can be used:
- Google AdWords keyword suggestion tool
- Search suggestions from search engines
- Tools like SEMrush, Bdarija.ma...
Keywords are ranked based on several criteria:
- Potential traffic volume
- Estimated conversion rate
- Competitiveness of the word
To optimize content, consider:
- Identifying what users are searching for (= keywords used)
- Adapting the editorial line based on the vocabulary used by internet users and organizing site contents according to user needs
- Skillfully writing URLs based on content, effectively transmitting them (HTTP), and correctly and neatly formatting information (HTML)
Meta Tags
Meta tags have several characteristics: providing the page's title and a summary of its contents, informing robots about specific details of the site such as language, type of page being browsed, character encoding used, page author, etc. Meta tags are also used to redirect browsers to another page automatically, prevent caching, and index the page by search engines. The identifier code that respects the Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) is placed between the <head> and </head> tags at the beginning of the page as follows:
<meta name="robots" content="all, index, follow" />
This meta tag gives directives to robots to inspect the page. However, the robots' default guidelines are precisely like this, making it unnecessary to use this tag with “All, Index, Follow” attributes. The inverse code is:
<meta name="robots" content="noindex, nofollow" />
Log Analysis
When robots arrive at the site, they leave a mark on the server in the log file. Their passage can be recognized by a unique "signature."
Optimizing Content
Regarding site content, the trend is towards semantic search proposed by Google as it fits the way users formulate questions on the internet, especially with voice requests made from phones.
Monitoring Rankings and Indexing
Monitor indexing to verify that the engine still recognizes the page of interest. It is generally not practical to register sites in search engines if they are already indexed. Monitor rankings to improve the site's ranking according to important keywords. This tracking should be done frequently in thematic and general directories to maintain or improve acquired popularity by increasing the number and quality of backlinks to the site.
SEO Criteria
There are hundreds of criteria used by location determination algorithms. Here are some key ones:
- Page popularity
- Importance of linked pages
- Link text leading to the page
- Page relevance
- Page trust index
- Site age
- Domain authority
- PageRank
- Quality of links on that page
Benefits of SEO
SEO is often seen as a good way to avoid spending large sums on advertising campaigns by improving the ranking on free organic search engine results. However, thinking that SEO will place you among the top ten results on Google in a short period is wrong. Those who want to invest time and money in this process should consider that improving a site's ranking requires a well-studied set of keywords and a time frame that may be months or years.
